Windows 98 systems can lock-up or  freeze for many reasons here are a few of the more common ones PRB Solutions has encountered.

Mcafee virus engine out of date.

Even though you have been updating the anti-virus definition files, normally you don't update the engine. If the engine is too far out of date it can cause lockups and GPF's when it tries to run.

You can download the super dat file and install it. This will update your engine and definition files.

Hardware conflict

Devices in your systems are fighting for attention and some are sore  losers. If this has happened right after you have installed some new hardware then that is where to start looking. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your system.

Look in the system manager and check for non-running devices.

When all else fails, and you are an advanced user, take all your cards out of your system and add them back one at a time. Restart after each card and see if you can recreate the problem.  Sometimes just removing and adding the cards fixes the problem as it forces windows to reinstall each card.

Games cause system to freeze when started.

This could be a problem with Direct X. Download the latest from Microsoft

Game does not support your generation of Video Card. A symptom of this could be the game only running in software rendering mode.

Game was designed for Glide / OpenGL and your card does not support it.

Sound card problem. There are some games that have problems with the DirectX sound card drivers. Try turning the settings way down or off and see what happens
