About Us
First of all we should make it clear that PRB Solutions does not sell computers nor stock parts for resale. We do not receive nor have asked for any compensation from vendors for recommending their systems. PRB Solutions has a "source locally" policy when possible.

The following is only our opinion and is expressed as such. It is up to the consumer to determine what is best for them.

Now we got that out of the way lets answer that question.

Generally we do not advise any client to build their own  unless they feel comfortable doing their own troubleshooting and repairs.

  • No-Name clones are classified as tier 3 units.
  • Recognized name brands are classified as tier 2
  • IBM, Compaq, Dell, HP are classified as tier 1

The problem with tier 3 units is that since they normally are built by very small companies warrantee work can be an issue should the vendor cease business, also there can be issues where you have to send the unit for service.

Tier 2 units normally are the best buy, there are various repair depots so you are not tied into one reseller, You have some choice where warrantee work is done. Generally they do not use proprietary motherboards or special cases which can allow you  the opportunity to change motherboards or other major components at a later time if you so desire.

Tier 1 units normally have a large sales and support network behind them. This sometimes works against them as it can take a long time to wade through their support network to get a problem resolved.  Also many of the units can only be upgraded using parts from that particular vendor. They sometimes can be a good buy depending on what you want.

We recommend only tier 1 manufactures for servers and other mission critical systems.

I saw such a deal in the Vancouver paper.

Maybe you did, but have you considered the following

  • Does it include the Monitor?
  • Who pays to get it to your house?
  • Warrantee work, where and who pays for the shipping, how long does it take?
  • Who do I call when I have a problem?
  • what about software, who's going to help with that?

PRB Solutions always recommends that you buy local for many reasons.

  • A local vendor is hoping for continued sales from you.
  • A local vendor is going to be more likely to answer that question
  • A local vendor is more likely to lend you that monitor while yours is out for repair.
  • A local vendor is more likely to understand your unique situation.
  • In a lot of cases delivery to your door and one or two onsite/home service calls are included in your purchase price.

The local vendor has a vested interest in keeping you happy and as long as their prices are competitive we believe that you should support your local vendors.
